Customs Allowances in UK Airports... |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Dependent on your final travel destination your tax and duty free allowances of what you can bring into the UK will vary too. Here we have listed the allowances when travelling from the EU:
- Goods obtained duty and tax paid in the EU are unlimited
- 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%, or 2 Litres of still table wine, or fortified or sparkling wine, or other liqueurs
- 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
- 50g of perfume and 250ml of toilet water
- Other goods including souvenirs up to the value of £145
Do remember, that for the sake of Customs allowances, the Channel Islands are considered outside of the EU.
When arriving into the UK with goods that have had tax paid passengers won't be required to pay any additional tax or duty.
Do note however that strict laws cover the bringing back of alcohol and tobacco. All goods must be transported by the passenger and must be for their own personal use - consumption and/or gifts.
Any goods - especially alcohol and tobacco - brought into the UK for resale or for payment will be considered as for a commercial use. If
Customs become suspicious that any goods are being brought into the Country illegally the passengers will be subject to a series of intense questions. For example: what are the type and quantity of goods that have been bought? Why were they purchased? How much was paid? How often does the passenger travel? How much alcohol and tobacco does the passenger normally consume?
Consideration will also be given to whether the goods have been concealed or are visible.
Or example, Customs are likely to suspect if the following quantities are being imported:
- 110 Litres of beer
- 90 Litres of wine
- 10 Litres of spirits
- 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
- 3,200 cigarettes
- 200 cigars
- 400 cigarillos
- 3kg tobacco
If a decision is made that the goods have been brought into the UK for commercial use then the goods will be seized and not returned. The same applies if passengers are caught selling the goods. Customs consider this a very serious offence and can result in a sentence of up to 7 years in jail.
Many Countries follow their own laws and allowances for duty and tax free goods, with some requiring you to carry documents covering the goods in your possession. It is highly advised that if passengers are planning to bring back larger than average quantities of goods to check with the Country’s Authorities in advance.
In addition, some EU Countries have their own special rules for cigarettes and certain tobacco products: |
