Glasgow Airport’s master plan outlines how the airport will expand between now and 2015, and then on to 2030.
The terminal facilities will be expanded to cater for an increase of passengers from 8.6 million a year to around 13 million a year. Aircraft movements will rise to cope with the higher demand, and other facilities at the airport will need to be expanded such as parking and the road system. In addition, a new Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL) could be operational by 2008.
By 2030, passenger numbers could rise to between 17 and 24 million a year. This will result in further airport expansion, and a large amount of hectares of land has been earmarked for the airport developments.
Air and noise pollution is therefore a concern for the local Glasgow community. The proposed airport expansion will come alongside improved operations and landscaping to minimise the effect., and environmental concerns will also be carefully considered.
The airport expansion however will also create more jobs, act as a hub for regular flyers and also improve Glasgow’s tourist trade, and so could have a positive effect on the local house prices.
