Glasgow Airport was officially opened on 27th June 1966 by Her Majesty The Queen after opening its doors to passengers one month earlier.
During the airport’s first year of operation, 1.5 million passengers travelled through the terminal through 34,000 aircraft movements.
The growth of the package holiday saw Glasgow Airport grow through the 70’s, with airlines such as Laker, Tarom, Britannia, British Midland, Iberia and Channel all flying to popular European destinations.
>In January 1975, a transfer of ownership from Glasgow Corporation to BAA was agreed with effect from 1st April.
In 1976, a £2 million extension to the international area of the terminal building was started.
In the 1980’s passengers numbers reached 4 million and so the airport embarked on a massive development of the terminal, increasing the size of the terminal by 70% in 1989.
During the 90’s, a number of airlines switched their operation from Prestwick to Glasgow Airport following the Government announcement that trans-Atlantic carriers could now fly from the airport of their choice.
In 1994, the new international pier was officially opened, and by 2000, Glasgow was handling over 6.9 Million passengers.
A new multi-storey car park that linked to the main terminal opened in 2002.
By 2003, passenger numbers and exceeded 8 million, and by 2004, Glasgow became the first airport to handle more than one million passengers in a month.
In 2004, the airport’s second terminal ‘T2’ was opened, providing an additional 9 check-in desks and a state of the art baggage screening system.
The airport’s future was detailed in BAA’s master plan in 2005, outlining plans to develop the airport to handle as many as 24 million passengers by 2030. |
