Happy Holidays ...

This informative guide helps flight passengers departing Glasgow Airport with everything from actually leaving your home, security tips, getting to Glasgow, parking at Glasgow Airport, travelling with children plus much, much more.

Arriving At Glasgow Airport ...

Glasgow Airport's access road is signposted from the A96 Glasgow to Inverness road, and is just seven miles from Glasgow's city centre.

The airport's main car parks are in front of the terminal building, offering both short and long stay car parking.

You can find information on getting to Glasgow when travelling by:

Glasgow Airport Parking ...

Choose from short stay, long stay parking or meet and greet valet parking, all available at Glasgow Airport.

Parking at Glasgow's short stay parking is recommended for persons dropping off or collection air travellers, or for stays of up to five hours.

Parking at Glasgow's long stay parking is recommended when passengers are travelling away for longer than a few days - there are a choice of two options, depending on budget and convenience required.

The long stay car park requires passengers to take a transfer bus to the airport terminal, or meet and greet valet parking allows passengers to drive straight to the airport terminal, so there is no need for transfer buses (and additional time that this requires).

Valet Meet and Greet passengers meet their Rep right outside the airport terminal and proceed directly to check-in. Their vehicle is then taken to a safe and secure car park. The car is then delivered straight back to the airport terminal, ready and waiting for the passenger to collect from the Rep, for a drive straight home.

Valet meet and greet is the ideal car parking service for families with young children, those passengers with heavy bags or sports equipment, corporate travellers without the luxury of time, and people with disabilities or special needs.

Typical prices for meet and greet Glasgow airport parking cost around £83 for one week and £118 for two weeks, depending on the operator you choose.

Pre-booking valet parking is advised to ensure availability.

Glasgow Airport also offers Fast Track parking.  The Fast Track under cover parking area is located within the short stay car park and offers a quick link into the terminal.  Prices start from £11.00 for 24 hours or part thereof.

At The Airport ...

Once arriving at Glasgow Airport move swiftly to check-in where luggage can be deposited for loading onto the aircraft, leaving you free to enjoy your pre-flight time, especially when travelling with children, or disabilities or special needs.

Be advised that security checks now take longer with the UK on strict security control measures. Do consider this when planning your journey and home departure time.

Type Of Flight Check In Time
Long Haul Flights 3 HOURS before departure
European Flights 2 HOURS before departure
UK & Northern Ireland Flights 1 HOUR before departure

Before you check-in at Glasgow Airport make sure you have all your luggage with you at all times. Never ask anyone to look after your luggage for you and never look after another passenger's luggage. Equally you must never offer to carry someone else's hand luggage onto the aircraft.

Immediately alert a member of airport staff if you notice any unattended packages.

Display boards are in the terminal advising of each flight's boarding gate number. With some gates, in larger airports, taking up to 30 minutes walking time to get to, make sure you set off for the boarding gate in good time.

You can find more information on the security checks you will pass through between the check-in desks and boarding the Aircraft, visit the Airport Safety and Security section within this Fly Guide.

Your Flight ...

Be prepared for your flight and make it more bearable for all of you. In the following sections of this Airport Information site we advise on hand luggage essentials that are so often forgotten about, and there's a section on travelling with children so read on for a stress-free flight!

Hand luggage isn't just for tickets, cash and passport - use it to pack other important things like prescribed medication, valuables, decongestants if you've got a cold for example. Even a change of top and a toothbrush in the event of a long delay.

Don't go hungry - airline food can be quite small portions. Eat well before your flight and pack some snacks (excluding fruit & diary as stipulated by Customs).

Pack a good book and some magazine, even though most long-haul flights normally play a selection of movies and TV programmes throughout the flight.

Keep yourself comfortable from swollen hands and feet and dry skin caused by cabin pressure by staying hydrated - drink lots of water and limit the amount of alcohol you have, before and during your flight. And carry some moisturiser to help prevent dry skin.

Help your feet stay comfortable, take off your shoes and socks. You could even pack some small sandals (they'll come in handy if you're landing in a hot country).

It gets very cold in the cabin during a flight so pack/wear a warm jumper as you may get cold (it can even double up as a pillow if you don't end up using it).

Earplugs and an eye mask are great if you have trouble sleeping with the normal aircraft and passenger noises and they are small enough to fit nicely in your hand luggage.

If you suffer from travel sickness, make sure you have packed pills or wrist bands remedies.

DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis - is a serious condition where blood clots develop in the deep veins of the legs when persons have had little or no exercise i.e. a long haul flight recent evidence shows.

Try to get up and walk around on the flight, especially if travelling on a long-haul journey. Stretch your legs, wiggle your toes to help get that blood circulating.

Here are our Top Tips on Staying Comfortable When Flying before you travel.

  Staying Comfortable When Flying
  1. Upgrade Ask if there are any Business Class or First Class upgrades available.
  2. Front Row Seats

Alternatively ask for a front row seat or a seat by an emergency exit for extra leg room.

3. Aisle Seats

Aisle seats have extra leg room too - you can occasionally stretch your legs out and it makes it things a bit easier for you to get up and down to the bathroom without having to climb over other passengers next to you.

4. Pillow

Think about buying a blow up neck supporter pillow to help you sleep.  Ear plugs and an eye mask can help shut out some of the onboard noises, so you can get to sleep easier.

5. Painful Ears

Don't suffer with painful ears during take off or landing. There are special ear plugs - brands such as Earplanes - available which equalise the air pressure on each side of the ear drum.

6. Dehydration

Stay hydrated - drink lots of water and avoid alcohol. Pack a bottle of water in your hand luggage.

7. Snacks

In-flight meals can be very small so pack some snacks for the whole family. You will be able to buy snacks onboard but prices can be high.

8. Anxiety

If you think your anxiety maybe too intense, talk to your Doctor so they can recommend something to help keep you calm before and during the flight. Alternatively learn some breathing exercises, or try and get stuck into a good book or a crossword.

Travel With Children ...

Travelling with children can be hard at the best of times, and even worse if you are on a long flight. So it's not too painful for all concerned take note of the following top tips and advice...

Make sure you've packed some bits and pieces that will keep your children entertained - things like colouring books and crayons, story books and sticker books. You could always consider buying a few new toys. You could even wrap them up so it adds to the surprise. Unwrapping them, and guessing what's inside can become a game in itself. By packing soft toys you and your child can create stories and adventures based around them.

It's likely that your child will be offered an in-flight entertainment pack. These are great for keeping kids amused, but don't rely on them for the whole journey as they are often small and will only entertain for a short amount of time.

If you are travelling with a small baby then take time out before you travel to make sure you have everything you need. Also contact the airline in advance of travel to see if they have any cabin cots for your baby to sleep in. You're likely to need baby food or formula milk, finger food and nibbles, cold water sterilising tablets, spare nappies, nappy sacks and a change of clothes in case of any accidents.

Make sure you've packed some warm clothes and a blanket for your baby too as the temperature in the cabin can get jolly cold!

Travel With Disabilities / Special Needs ...

It is advised that those passengers travelling with disabilities or special needs, that require assistance at the airport check that this is covered in the price they have paid for their airline ticket.

It is also important that the airline are aware of any disabilities.

If passengers are in a wheelchair it may be that they are required to transfer into an airline chair at check-in. Should passengers prefer to stay in their own wheelchair until boarding, double check with the airline if this is possible before leaving for the airport.

As Glasgow Airport is a large building, with a huge number of boarding gates, it means that there are often long distances to travel between the terminals and to the gates. In many large international airports this time can be as long as 30 minutes!

Vehicles are available for those passengers with special needs, however do make sure that these are pre-booked in advance of travel to avoid any unnecessary delays.
