Taking Your Mobile Phone On Holiday ... |
| If you are taking your mobile phone on holiday with you, consider the following tips before you leave. |
| |
- You will need to contact your Network provider to activate your mobile phone for 'international roaming'. It can take up to 14 days for your mobile phone to be enabled so make sure you do this in plenty of time, in advance of your departure date.
- If you are travelling to America you will need a tri-band handset. Other countries require other hand-set types - check in advance with your Network provider to make sure you can make and receive calls.
- See if your Network provider has any deals for calling abroad relating to the country you are travelling to - sometimes deals are specific to destinations and can make you big savings.
- If there aren't any deals, check how much calling from abroad will cost you as it is much more expensive than in the UK and you might want to limit your calls from abroad for check in and emergencies only. It's also worth double checking just before you fly as prices can change at any given time.
- In addition, see if your Network provider has any deals for general overseas calls if you are a frequent traveller that could save you money in the long run.

Get The Right Overseas Tariff ... |
| |
| |
| It is worth making some enquiries with your Network provider about using your mobile abroad. Some providers offer international traveller tariffs, offering cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee. This can be cheaper if you are a frequent traveller. |
| |
| |
Alternatively you may want to consider using an alternative SIM card as this can sometimes be cheaper.
Available from international airports and some UK retailers an international SIM card will allow you to make and receive calls on your handset for the duration of your trip - do be aware however that they do have an expiry date so make sure it covers your trip/multiple trips away. |

Using Your Mobile Phone Abroad ... |
| |
| |
Once you have arrived at your overseas destination and turn your phone on it will locate itself to a local transmitter, to which all your calls will now be routed. So for example, if you are in France your phone still believes it's in the UK as it is routed via the UK - and that includes calls. So if you were calling a UK friend, also in France, your call will travel 1,800 miles for a call where the mobiles just a few miles apart. Hence why the call will cost you so much. And them too, they will be charged to receive the call.
By taking note of the points raised above, and effectively doing your homework before you travel, you could save yourself a lot of money. Don't be caught unawares, get the best deal for you. Whether that's an alternative SIM card or an overseas call tariff. |

Mobile Phone Security ... |
| |
| |
You will need to make a note of your mobile phone's IMEI/serial number should your mobile get lost or stolen. You'll also need to know your mobile telephone number and the number of your Network provider so you can alert them and they can cancel/block your phone.
Do give your Network provider a call prior to departure to confirm any other information they may require from you to cancel/block a lost or stolen phone.
Another important factor to consider when taking your mobile abroad is if you have suitable travel insurance cover - many policies do not cover mobile phones as standard so do check.
